Apple iPad Air 2’s Possible Match – Introducing the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7

We think the Apple iPad Air 2 has just met its match in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7. Still to be confirmed rumours have already leaked out the designs and patterns of the alleged Galaxy Tab S2. Given that Samsung always releases a double edged sword when it comes to their tabs, this time we are anticipating the release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 somewhere in the not-too-distant future.

Specs to watch out for

A 3D render image leaked by OnLeaks shows an impressive high end premium looking model of the Tab S2 in a silver colour. The render also shows that the new model stands at 9.7 inches and is set to measure only 5.8mm – yep this is slimmer than Apple’s iPad Air 2 ladies and gentlemen. Other key specs to look out for on the Tab S2 include the octa-core 64 bit Exynos chipset that accommodates two quad core processors, a welcome 3GB worth of RAM and a 8 MP primary camera with HD video functionality supported by a 2.1 MP front facing camera for video calling and selfies. The Tab will be running on Android 5.0 Lollipop, no surprise there and is rumoured to also have the newest version of TouchWiz. Resolution wise we are looking at more than 2K worth of resolution, to be precise 2048 X 1536 pixels on AMOLED screens. Internal memory looks like folk will have to settle for 32GB as advertised, but those in the know say it’s actually only 25GB that will be available for use. Earlier reports had concluded that there was no microSD slot, but other sources argue that there will be a microSD slot, so this is still to be confirmed. The total weight of the Tab complete with battery is set at 407g.

Compared with Apple’s iPad Air 2

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 will be slimmer at 5.8mm compared to Apple’s 6.1mm iPad Air 2. The Tab S2 also weighs less at 407g compared to Apple’s 437g. Both have the same resolution and pixel density. Samsung’s secondary camera has more megapixels at 2.1 MP over the Air 2’s 1.2MP. When it comes to internal storage however, the Air 2 completely destroys the Tab S2. Where the Air 2 has 128GB of internal storage, the Tab S2 has a fraction of that at a minimal 32GB worth of storage.

TechTastic and GFX Bench have been some of the forerunners who released a series of benchmarks earlier in the year about the probable specs of the new tab, but the South Korean tech giant has not yet said anything to all the alleged rumours that have been flying around.

It will be interesting to see just what other specs the new Samsung tab will bear, and how the latest tab from Samsung will bear up against its rival competitor, Apple.
